It can be in an ocean, a sea, a lake, or a river. This area is very busy with life. Many plants grow here because sunlight reaches the bottom.

In lakes, this zone covers about 78% of the total area. This makes it one of the most productive places on Earth. Some parts of this zone are as busy as a rainforest.

In the ocean, there are different parts. The supralittoral zone is just above the high tide mark. It gets splashed by waves but is not underwater. The eulittoral zone is the intertidal zone. This part is under water and then dry twice a day. The sublittoral zone is always under water. It goes down to the edge of the continental shelf.
