Below that lies the circalittoral zone, where sessile animals like mussels and oysters are more common. The sublittoral zone typically extends to the edge of the continental shelf, at depths around 200 meters. 
Definitions of the littoral zone vary depending on the discipline or agency involved. The term originates from the Latin noun "litus," which means "shore." While marine biologists focus on light penetration and depth, military groups use the term differently. For example, the US Navy divides the littoral zone for specific naval operations. The UK Ministry of Defence defines the littoral as land areas susceptible to influence from the sea. Even the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Army Corps of Engineers use their own definitions. These specific meanings often carry legal implications for how the land and water are managed.
In freshwater lake ecosystems, the littoral zone is defined by light. It is the nearshore habitat where photosynthetically active radiation reaches the lake bottom in enough quantity to support photosynthesis. This zone often forms a fringing wetland. These wetlands can be categorized into four types: wooded wetlands, wet meadows, marshes, and areas of aquatic vegetation. The size of these areas depends on the profile of the shoreline and past water levels. For instance, the area of a wet meadow increases when water levels fluctuate naturally. 
Plants known as macrophytes are essential to the productivity of lake littoral zones. These aquatic plants are categorized by how they grow in the water. Emergent macrophytes have stalks and leaves that extend above the surface. Floating-leaved macrophytes are rooted in the lakebed but have leaves on the surface. Free-floating macrophytes drift on the water, while submerged macrophytes grow entirely underwater. These plants act as a carbon sink, which helps regulate the global climate. They also provide necessary food and habitat for many vertebrates, including mammals, waterfowl, and reptiles.
Despite their importance, littoral zones face significant risks from human activity. Human settlement near shorelines often disrupts breeding habitats. For example, many turtles are killed on roads when they move from water to land to lay eggs. Docks and retaining walls can also destroy shallow-water breeding grounds for fish. Additionally, the use of dams to stabilize water levels can harm these ecosystems. Dams remove the natural spring floods that carry essential nutrients into the littoral zone. This can shrink a broad wetland into a very narrow band of vegetation, specifically affecting marshes and wet meadows.
