The low tide zone stays underwater most of the time. It is only exposed to the air during the very lowest tides. This zone is full of marine plants like seaweed. Because there is so much sunlight and food, creatures here can grow to be quite large.

Many different kinds of living things call this zone home. You might find sea stars, sea urchins, and crabs living among the rocks. There are also many types of snails, mussels, and sponges. In rocky areas, small holes called tide pools form in the stone. These pools fill with water as the tide rises. They provide a safe home for many small creatures. Even migratory birds visit these shores to find food like mollusks.

This zone is also important for people and laws. In the United States, different states have different rules about who owns the wet sand. For example, Massachusetts uses the low-water mark to show where private property ends.

The intertidal zone can be a narrow strip on Pacific islands. However, on other coasts, it can include many meters of shallow beach slopes.

Researchers use the intertidal zone as a model system to study ecology. It is easier to study species here than in terrestrial habitats.
