Some living things can live in many places. We call these species generalists. Other living things need very specific things to stay alive. We call these species specialists.
Habitats can be very big or very small. A habitat might be a large forest or a desert. 

Habitats can change. A volcano or a storm can change a home quickly. Changes can also happen slowly over a long time. Human activities like building cities can change habitats too. Even cities can become homes for animals like birds and foxes.
A habitat is the natural home of a living thing. It is the place where a species can find everything it needs to survive and have babies. This includes food and the presence or absence of predators. A habitat also provides physical things like soil, moisture, light, and temperature. You can think of a habitat as the physical version of an ecological niche. An ecological niche is the specific role a creature plays in its home. 
How a habitat works depends on what a species needs. Some living things are called habitat generalists. These creatures can thrive in many different kinds of environments. For example, the small white butterfly Pieris rapae lives on almost every continent except Antarctica. Other living things are called habitat specialists. These creatures need a very limited set of factors to stay alive. The large blue butterfly Phengaris arion only lives in chalk grasslands. It needs specific plants and even needs certain ants to live nearby.
People have used the word "habitat" since about 1755. It comes from the Latin word habitāre, which means to inhabit. This is related to the word habēre, meaning to have or to hold. Scientists use different terms to describe different scales of life. They might use "habitat-type" to describe many species living in one area. A biotope is a similar term for an area with the same environmental conditions. 
Habitats come in many different sizes and types. There are terrestrial habitats on land, like forests, grasslands, and deserts. Arid habitats are very dry places like the deserts in Egypt. Freshwater habitats include rivers, lakes, and ponds. Marine habitats are in the ocean, such as coral reefs or the deep seabed. 
Habitats do not always stay the same. They can change because of violent events like volcanoes or tsunamis. Changes can also happen slowly over thousands of years as the climate shifts. Human activities like damming rivers or cutting down forests also change homes. Even cities can become habitats for many animals. For example, about 2,000 coyotes live in and around Chicago.

Habitats exist at many different scales, including microhabitats. A microhabitat is a small-scale area with unique physical requirements like light, humidity, or air movement. For instance, the lichens on the north face of a boulder differ from those on the south face or the top. Within a single wood, microhabitats include tree trunks, branches, leaves, and even the soil. Even a single leaf, such as those of the Alnus nepalensis tree, can serve as a microhabitat for a leaf beetle. 
Scientists categorize habitats into several broad types. Terrestrial habitat types include forests, grasslands, wetlands, and deserts. Arid habitats, such as the deserts in Egypt, are defined by very little available water. 
Life in extreme habitats requires specialized biological adaptations. In arid environments, some frogs live underground to create moist habitats and hibernate during dry periods. The Couch's spadefoot toad emerges from its burrow only during downpours to lay eggs in transient pools. Its tadpoles can undergo metamorphosis in as little as nine days. Similarly, fairy shrimps can lay "winter eggs" that resist drying out. These eggs can remain dormant in the dust for as long as fifteen years until new water arrives.
Habitats are not permanent and can change through various processes. Change can be caused by violent events like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, or wildfires. 
Even human-made urban environments function as habitats for adaptable generalists. In cities, pigeons and sparrows use buildings for nesting, while bats use roof spaces for roosting. Many animals, such as rats, mice, and foxes, have followed humans globally. In Chicago, it is estimated that about 2,000 coyotes live in and around the city. In warmer climates, urban habitats also host many species of termites, with 183 species known to affect buildings.
