Most estuaries formed a long time ago. They appeared during the Holocene epoch. This was when the sea level began to rise. It happened about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. 
There are different kinds of estuaries. Some are called drowned river valleys. These are common in temperate places like the Chesapeake Bay. 

Estuaries do a lot of important jobs. They act as nurseries for the sea. Many young fish and shellfish grow up here. They also provide food for many migratory birds. Wetlands like salt marshes act as natural filters. They clean the water by catching dirt and waste. This keeps the water clear for everyone. Plants like grasses also help stop the shoreline from washing away. 
An estuary is a partially enclosed coastal body of water. It forms where freshwater from rivers or streams meets saltwater from the open sea. This mixing creates brackish water, which is water that is saltier than a river but less salty than the ocean. Estuaries act as ecotones. An ecotone is a transition zone where two different ecosystems, like a river and the sea, overlap. Because they sit between land and ocean, estuaries are among the most productive natural habitats on Earth. 
The way an estuary works depends on the constant movement of water. Freshwater flows from the land toward the coast. At the same time, marine processes like tides and waves push saltwater into the estuary. This creates a dynamic system where water chemistry is always changing. The amount of salt in the water depends on several factors. These include the volume of freshwater flowing in, the range of the tides, and how much water evaporates. 
Scientists classify estuaries using four main criteria. These are salinity distribution, geomorphology, water circulation, and system energetics. Geomorphology refers to the shape and structure of the land and water. Most existing estuaries formed during the Holocene epoch. This happened about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago when sea levels began to rise. As the water rose, it flooded valleys that were either carved by rivers or scoured by glaciers.
One major type is the drowned river valley, also called a coastal plain estuary. These occur where rising sea levels penetrate river valleys. The shape of the estuary stays similar to the original river valley. They are common in temperate climates. Examples include the Chesapeake Bay in the U.S. and the Severn Estuary in the United Kingdom. These often look wedge-shaped, being narrow in the inner part and broadening toward the sea.
Another type is the bar-built estuary, or lagoon-type. These are shallow and are separated from the ocean by sand spits or barrier islands. They are common in tropical and subtropical locations. These estuaries form when sediment deposition keeps pace with rising sea levels. Barrier beaches can form from wave action or the movement of river sediment. Narrow inlets are often the only way for ocean water to reach these lagoons. 
Fjord-type estuaries are much different because they were shaped by ice. During the Pleistocene epoch, glaciers deepened and widened river valleys. This created U-shaped valleys with very steep sides and rock bottoms. At the mouth of a fjord, there is often a sill. A sill is a ridge of rock or glacial deposits. These sills can restrict water flow. If the sill is very shallow, the deep water below it might stay stagnant for a long time. 
Finally, some estuaries are tectonically produced. These are formed by the movement of the Earth's crust, such as faulting, volcanoes, or landslides. There are only a small number of these. The San Francisco Bay is a notable example. It was formed by crustal movements within the San Andreas Fault system. This movement caused the land to sink and allow the sea to move in. 
Estuaries provide essential ecosystem services. They serve as nurseries for the sea by supporting the early life stages of fish and shellfish. They also act as natural filters. Wetlands like salt marshes and swamps catch sediments, nutrients, and pollutants from upland runoff. This process improves water quality. Additionally, vegetation like salt marsh grasses stabilizes shorelines to prevent erosion. This protects both natural habitats and human infrastructure from storms.
