Most of the seabed is a flat area called the abyssal plain. Near the land, the floor slopes down. This area is the continental shelf. It then drops off at the continental slope.

Deep in the ocean, there are huge mountains. We call this the mid-ocean ridge system.

There are also very deep valleys called trenches. Some parts of the seabed have hydrothermal vents. These vents let out very hot water and chemicals.

Many layers of sediment cover the floor. Sediment is the material that settles on the bottom. Some comes from land. Rain and rivers carry dust and rocks to the sea.

Other sediment comes from tiny living things. When they die, their shells sink. These shells make biogenous sediment.

Some sediment even comes from space! This material is called cosmogenous sediment. It comes from things like comets and asteroids.
