Nonviolence

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nonviolence is a way to work for social change without causing harm. It means choosing to do no harm in what people do, say, or intend. This idea is not just about staying still or being passive. For example, if a house is on fire, nonviolence means putting the fire out. It is an active way to help others and fix problems. People use these methods to change laws or help their communities.

There are two main ways people practice nonviolence. The first way is called principled nonviolence. This comes from religious or moral beliefs. People who follow this path try to change hearts and minds with love. They believe that all living things have a special spiritual energy. They might even choose to be vegetarian to avoid hurting animals. The second way is called pragmatic nonviolence. This is used as a smart strategy to reach a goal. People following this path believe that violence is too costly to use.

The roots of nonviolence go back a very long time. In religions like Jainism, Buddhism, and Hinduism, it is called ahimsa. In Jainism, ahimsa is a core part of how people live. It involves thoughts, words, and actions. Ancient scholars in Hinduism also worked to perfect these ideas. Some thinkers in the past, like William Lloyd Garrison, used these ideas to fight for equality. He helped found a group in 1838 to reject all violent actions.

Many famous leaders have used nonviolence to change the world. Mahatma Gandhi led a long struggle for Indian independence.

In America, Martin Luther King Jr. used these methods during the Civil Rights Movement. He wanted to end unfair laws that kept people apart. César Chávez also used nonviolence in the 1960s to help farm workers in California. In 1989, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia helped change their government without war.

Nonviolence shows that people can be very strong without using force. It relies on the idea that leaders need the consent of the people to have power. If many people stop cooperating, things can change. Even the United Nations has recognized this importance. They named the years 2001 to 2010 as a special decade for peace. This helps remind everyone that kindness and cooperation are powerful tools. It connects the ideas of old religions to modern ways of making the world better.
