People who follow this path often give up worldly pleasures. They may own very few things. Some choose to fast by eating little food. Many people do this for their faith. They want to reach spiritual goals or find inner peace. They might spend much time in prayer or meditation.

This way of life is very old. It is found in many religions. In India, followers of Buddhism and Hinduism practice it.

Some people live in groups, like monks or nuns. Others live all alone as hermits.

Some thinkers call this a form of training. The word comes from a Greek term for exercise. It can be done in a natural way. This means living with very simple clothes or sleeping on a floor. Other ways can be much harder. Some people use very strict rules to punish their own bodies. They believe this helps purify their soul and brings them closer to a divine being.
