He lived during the 1700s. Many people in Bengal still love his devotional songs. These songs are often called Ramprasadi. He is a major figure in the bhakti movement. This movement focuses on deep, personal devotion to a god. Ramprasad was a Shakta, which means he focused on the goddess Kali. He treated the goddess as a tender, loving mother. This was a new and intimate way to write about her.

His life was filled with music and prayer. Ramprasad created a brand new style of music. He combined Bengali folk music, called Baul, with classical melodies. He also mixed in a style called kirtan. This new way of composing music took root in Bengal. It lasted for over one hundred and fifty years. Many other poet-composers followed his lead. They mixed folk styles with raga-based classical melodies.

This helped bridge the gap between common folk music and formal classical music.

Ramprasad was born into a Baidya Brahmin family. His exact birth date is not known. Most people believe he was born around 1718 or 1723. He was born in Garalgachha in the Hooghly District. His father, Ramram Sen, was a Sanskrit scholar and a doctor. Ramprasad went to a Sanskrit school called a tol. There, he learned many things. He studied Sanskrit grammar, literature, Hindi, and Persian. He was a very talented student from a young age.

His path was not always easy. His parents wanted him to have a practical job. They even married him to a girl named Sarvani to help him grow up. Later, he worked as an accountant in Kolkata. He earned thirty rupees a month from a man named Durga Charan Mitra. Ramprasad actually wrote his poems inside his accounting books! His boss found out about this. Instead of being angry, the boss was moved by his skill. He told Ramprasad to go home and focus on his songs.

Ramprasad's influence reaches far into the future. Many famous people have admired his work. A mystic named Ramakrishna Paramahamsa loved to sing his songs. Another person named Paramahansa Yogananda also sang them often. Even a writer named Sister Nivedita compared him to the poet William Blake. His books include titles like Vidyasundar and Shaktigiti. Today, you can still find collections of his music in temples. His songs continue to bring people together through faith and art.
