He is recognized as a major figure in the bhakti movement. This movement emphasizes intense, personal devotion to a deity. As a Shakta, Ramprasad focused his devotion on the goddess Kali. He was unique because he addressed Kali with intimate, tender emotions. He often described her as a loving mother or even a young girl. This approach changed how people expressed their faith through poetry.

Ramprasad developed a revolutionary musical style in Bengal. He combined the Bengali folk style of Baul music with classical melodies. He also integrated kirtan, a traditional form of devotional singing, into his work. This new compositional form blended folk elements with raga-based melodies. His style bridged the gap between classical, semi-classical, and folk music. This musical tradition took root in Bengali culture for over 150 years. Many subsequent poet-composers adopted this method of mixing different musical genres.

Biographies of Ramprasad often blend historical facts with religious legends. He was born into a Bengali Baidya Brahmin family in Garalgachha. Because there are no birth records, his exact birth date is unknown. Scholars believe he was born around 1718 or 1723. His father, Ramram Sen, was a Sanskrit scholar and an Ayurvedic doctor. Ramprasad attended a Sanskrit tol, which is a traditional school. There, he mastered Sanskrit grammar, literature, Persian, and Hindi.

His spiritual life caused tension with his family during his youth. His parents hoped he would pursue a practical profession like his father. To encourage responsibility, they married him to a woman named Sarvani when he was twenty-two. During his religious initiation, he reportedly felt an intense longing for Kali. He later became a disciple of Krishnananda Agamavagisha. Agamavagisha was a famous Tantric scholar and a devotee of Kali. Under this guidance, Ramprasad learned Tantric sadhanas, which are spiritual disciplines.

Financial struggles forced Ramprasad to seek employment in Kolkata. He worked as an accountant for Durga Charan Mitra for thirty rupees a month. During this time, he wrote devotional poems inside his accounting books. When his employer discovered this, he was moved by Ramprasad's piety. Instead of firing him, Mitra paid him to return home and compose songs. This allowed Ramprasad to focus on his spiritual practices and poetry. He spent much of his time in meditation and prayer.

Ramprasad's devotion included various intense spiritual practices. He would meditate in a panchavati, a sacred grove of five specific trees. These trees include the banyan, bael, amalaki, ashoka, and peepul. He also reportedly meditated on a panchamundi asana. This is an altar containing five specific skulls: a snake, frog, rabbit, fox, and man.

His literary legacy includes several important works. These include Vidyasundar, Kali-kirtana, Krishna-kirtana, and Shaktigiti. Vidyasundar tells a traditional love story aided by Kali. Shaktigiti is a highly respected work where he expresses his deepest love for the goddess. His songs are known as Ramprasadi and remain popular today. Collections of these songs are still sold at Shakta temples and pithas in Bengal. Many people find his poetic style to be sweet and familiar.

Many notable figures have admired the work of Ramprasad. The 19th-century mystic Ramakrishna Paramahamsa frequently sang his songs. Paramahansa Yogananda was also a known admirer of his devotional music. The writer Sister Nivedita even compared him to the English poet William Blake.
