He grew up in a very poor but very religious Brahmin family. His father was named Khudiram Chattopadhyaya and his mother was Chandramani Devi. As a child, he had many intense spiritual visions. One famous story tells of him seeing white cranes flying against dark clouds. This sight was so powerful that he collapsed in a state of joy. He called this experience his first superconsciousness experience.

As he grew older, his life changed from a village boy to a temple priest.

Around age twenty, he began working at the Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Calcutta. This temple was built by a wealthy woman named Rani Rasmani. While serving as a priest, his intense practices led to many spiritual visions. He eventually became a famous guru to many different people. He attracted social leaders, elites, and common people alike. In 1865, he was initiated into sannyasa, which is a life of a monk, by Tota Puri.

Ramakrishna's influence continued long after his life ended. He was married to Sarada Devi in 1859, and she was a key part of his life.

He is widely recognized for his profound spiritual experiences and his teachings on religious unity. His central philosophy suggested that different world religions are simply various paths toward a single, identical goal. Many of his followers consider him to be an avatar, a term meaning a divine incarnation. Rather than focusing strictly on scriptural injunctions, he emphasized the importance of direct, personal spiritual experience. This approach helped shape modern religious thought in India and beyond.

His spiritual methodology involved an intense exploration of various religious traditions. While he was a devoted follower of the goddess Kali, he did not limit his practice to one path. He engaged with Hindu traditions such as Vaishnavism, Tantric Shaktism, and Advaita Vedanta. Furthermore, he explored the practices of Christianity and Sufi Islam to test his theories. Through these diverse methods, he sought to reach samadhi. Samadhi is a state of meditative consciousness that is essential for spiritual liberation in many Indian traditions.

Ramakrishna's early life was marked by both poverty and intense religious devotion. He was born on February 18, 1836, in the village of Kamarpukur, India.

His parents, Khudiram Chattopadhyaya and Chandramani Devi, belonged to a pious Bengali Brahmin family. The family faced significant financial hardship after an unscrupulous landlord took their ancestral property. Despite these struggles, Ramakrishna's childhood was filled with what he described as supernatural visions. His parents also reportedly experienced visions regarding his birth, including a dream involving the deity Bhagavan Gadadhara.

Even as a young child, Ramakrishna showed signs of deep spiritual sensitivity. At age nine, he received the sacred thread, making him eligible for ritual worship. He described his first "superconsciousness experience" occurring when he was ten or eleven years old. While walking through a paddy field, the sight of white cranes against dark clouds overwhelmed him. This experience caused him to lose external awareness and collapse.

While he interpreted this as samadhi, some naturalistic thinkers have suggested it might have been a trance or an epileptic seizure.

His formal education was limited, as he had little interest in subjects like arithmetic. Instead, he focused on religious texts like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. He also developed talents in painting, acting, and making images. In 1852, he moved to Calcutta to assist his brother with priestly work. This move led him to the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, which had been founded by a wealthy woman named Rani Rasmani.

At the temple, Ramakrishna served as a priest and gained widespread acclaim as a guru. He attracted a diverse following, ranging from common people to social elites. In 1859, he was married to Sarada Devi, who became a vital spiritual counterpart in his life.

In 1865, he was formally initiated into sannyasa, the life of a monk, by the Vedanta monk Tota Puri. Although he was initially reluctant to be a leader, he eventually taught many disciples and laid the groundwork for the monastic Ramakrishna Order.

Ramakrishna passed away on August 15, 1886, due to throat cancer. His death marked a transition for his spiritual mission. His chief disciple, Swami Vivekananda, took the lead in expanding these teachings. Vivekananda was instrumental in bringing Ramakrishna's ideas to both India and the Western world. Today, the Ramakrishna Order continues to promote his message of religious harmony and direct experience. His life remains a foundational example of how diverse religious paths can intersect through personal devotion.
