Many people follow a way called Vaishnavism.

Vaishnavism is a major part of the Hindu faith.

This tradition is very large. A study in 2020 estimated 399 million followers. It grew from many old local beliefs. These groups joined together over a long time. Some groups focused on Krishna. Others focused on Rama. This helped the Bhakti movement spread. The Bhakti movement is about showing deep love for a god.
There are many important holy books. These include the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita. People also read the Bhagavata Purana. In South India, many poets wrote songs for Vishnu. These poets were called Alvars. They lived a long time ago. They showed great devotion through their poems.
Vaishnavism is one of the largest groups within the Hindu religion. Its followers are called Vaishnavas or Vaishnavites. They believe that Vishnu is the supreme being, often called Mahavishnu. This belief is very important to hundreds of millions of people. A 2020 estimate from the World Religion Database says there are about 399 million followers. This makes it the largest Hindu sect in the world.
One of the most special ideas in this tradition is the avatar doctrine. An avatar is a different form or incarnation of the supreme God.

It is hard to know exactly when Vaishnavism began. It likely grew from many different local traditions that joined together. Some scholars believe it started between the 7th and 4th centuries BCE. At first, people worshipped figures like Vasudeva and Krishna separately. Later, these traditions merged with the worship of the Vedic God Vishnu. This process helped different groups find common ground. Over time, these many paths became the single tradition we see today. It was a long journey of many different ideas coming together.
In South India, the tradition has its own beautiful history. Devoted poets called the Alvars wrote many songs to show their love. These poets lived around the 12th century and helped the faith grow. They used beautiful poems to express their deep devotion. The collection of their work is called the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. This was compiled by a person named Nathamuni in the 10th century. These songs helped spread the Bhakti movement across the land. This movement focused on showing great love to a god.
Many important books guide the lives of Vaishnavas. They study the Vedas and the Upanishads to learn.
Vaishnavism, also known as Vishnuism, is a major religious tradition within Hinduism.
A central mechanism of this faith is the avatar doctrine. An avatar is a distinct incarnation or form of the supreme God.

The tradition includes several specific sub-sects based on which avatar is emphasized. Krishnaism focuses on Krishna as the supreme being. Ramaism holds that Rama is the supreme being. These groups allow for specialized paths of worship within the larger Vaishnava framework. The tradition is also organized into four major Vedanta schools, known as sampradayas. These schools offer different philosophical explanations for the nature of God and the soul. The Vishishtadvaita school was established by Ramanuja during the medieval era. The Dvaita school was founded by Madhvacharya. Other important schools include Nimbarkacharya's Dvaitadvaita and Vallabhacharya's Shuddhadvaita.
The exact origins of Vaishnavism remain unclear due to scanty historical evidence. Most scholars hypothesize that it emerged from the fusion of various regional, non-Vedic religions. Between the 7th and 4th centuries BCE, several theistic traditions began to develop. These included the Bhagavata cults of Vāsudeva-Krishna and the Pancaratra-cult of Narayana. Over time, these traditions merged with the worship of the Vedic God Vishnu. This process helped the faith become recognized within the orthodox Vedic establishment. Some scholars suggest the merger of the Vrishni hero Vāsudeva and the Yadava hero Krishna was a key step.
In South India, the tradition developed with unique cultural characteristics. The Alvars were a group of devoted poets who lived around the 12th century. They were "immersed" in their devotion to the deity Perumal. Their poetic works were later compiled into a significant liturgy called the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. This compilation was completed by Nathamuni in the 10th century. The Alvars were vital to the spread of the Bhakti movement. This movement emphasized intense, loving devotion to a god. Their influence helped consolidate the faith across the southern Indian subcontinent.
Historical dynasties also played a role in supporting the faith. The Pallava dynasty in the south patronized Vaishnavism and built various shrines. They were among the first to offer wealth to the Venkateswara temple at Tirumala. In the north, many Gupta kings identified as Parama Bhagavatas, or Bhagavata Vaishnavas.
Many sacred texts guide the spiritual life of Vaishnavas. They study the ancient Vedas and the Upanishads. The Bhagavad Gita is a fundamental scripture used to understand duty and devotion. They also rely on the Bhagavata Purana and the Pancharatra texts. These writings provide the theological foundation for the various sampradayas. By studying these texts, followers explore the relationship between the individual soul and the supreme Brahman. This connection between literature, philosophy, and devotion defines the Vaishnava experience.
