He lived a long time ago, around the 4th or 5th century. His name means "the Kinsman of Abundance." He had a brother named Asanga. Together, they helped start a school of thought called Yogacara. This school teaches that things we see are based on our minds.

Vasubandhu wrote many important books. One famous book is the *Abhidharmakośakārikā*. Many people in East Asia still study it today. He also wrote about logic and poetry. He was a great debater. A king once gave him 300,000 pieces of gold for winning a debate. Vasubandhu used that gold to build hospitals and homes for monks.

He had many big ideas about the self. He believed there is no permanent, solid "self." Instead, he said we are made of many changing parts. These parts include our senses and our thoughts. He thought the idea of a single, unchanging soul was not true. Vasubandhu lived to be 100 years old. He remains a major figure in Buddhist history.
