His name means "protected by the one at peace." He was a Buddhist monk. He studied at a large school called Nalanda. He became the head of that school. Later, he traveled to Tibet. A king invited him to help there. He helped build Samye. This was the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.

Śāntarakṣita had many big ideas. He combined different ways of thinking. He used ideas from schools like Madhyamaka and Yogācāra. He taught about two kinds of truth. One is the ultimate truth. He said all things are "empty" of a fixed nature. This means things do not have a permanent essence. The other is conventional truth. This is how we see things in daily life. He said things change and work in a certain way.

He also taught people how to be good. He spoke about virtues and kind actions. He helped translate holy books into the Tibetan language. He stayed at Samye for many years. He died after a sudden accident with a horse.
