Asanga had a half-brother named Vasubandhu. They were both very important teachers. Some stories say Asanga was born in a place called Purusapura. Other stories say he was born in Central India. Asanga spent many years in deep meditation. He wanted to understand the world better. Some say he traveled to a heaven called Tusita. There, he met a being named Maitreya to learn new things. Scholars wonder if Maitreya was a real person or a vision from meditation.

Asanga was a busy teacher. He founded 25 monasteries in India. One famous school was Veluvana. He chose eight special students to help spread his ideas. Asanga wrote many important books. Some books were written by him. Others are said to be from Maitreya. These books are still studied by many people today.
