He lived in India during the fourth century CE. He is best known for starting a school of thought called Yogācāra. This school is often called the school of idealism. It focuses on how our minds work and how we see things. Many people study his ideas to understand the path to enlightenment. His work helped shape how many people practice Buddhism today.

Asaṅga's life involved many years of deep study and meditation. He spent a long time trying to understand complex ideas. Some stories say he was not happy with his own knowledge at first. A monk named Paramārtha wrote that Asaṅga used his meditative powers to travel. He reportedly went to the Tuṣita Heaven to meet a being named Maitreya.

There is a big debate among scholars about this story. Some think Maitreya was a real teacher from history. Others believe Maitreya was a vision that came during deep meditation.

There are different stories about where Asaṅga was born. Some sources say he was born in a place called Puruṣapura. This area is known today as Peshawar in Pakistan. At that time, it was part of the kingdom of Gandhāra. Other writings say he and his half-brother were born in Central India. His brother was named Vasubandhu and was also a famous monk. Vasubandhu joined the Mahāyāna tradition after meeting Asaṅga and his followers.

Asaṅga was a very active teacher who traveled around India. He is said to have founded 25 Mahayana monasteries.

One of his most famous schools was Veluvana in the Magadha region. This area is part of modern-day Bihar. At Veluvana, he chose eight special disciples to help him. These students became famous teachers who spread his ideas far and wide. He is also remembered as one of the seventeen Nalanda masters.

Asaṅga wrote many important books called treatises. Some of these were definitely written by him. For example, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha is a major work about the Yogācāra school. Another book he wrote is called the Abhidharma-samuccaya.

Other books are called the Maitreya Corpus. Tibetan traditions say these were taught to him by Maitreya. These texts include works like the Madhyāntavibhāga. Even though scholars sometimes disagree on who wrote them, these books remain very important to many people.
