He lived in India a long time ago. His book is called the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā. It is a very important text for Buddhist thought. Many people study it today.

The book is made of 450 short verses. These verses are very brief. They were meant to be easy to memorize. Students would learn the verses by heart. Then, a teacher would explain them out loud. This helped students learn deep ideas.

Nāgārjuna had a big idea about how things exist. He spoke about emptiness. This does not mean nothing is there. It means things lack a fixed nature. He called this lack of a fixed nature svabhāva. He argued that things do not exist all by themselves. Instead, things happen because of other things. This idea is called dependent origination.

He used logic to show his points. He wanted to show that things are not self-caused. He also showed they are not caused by nothing. His work changed many Buddhist groups. It had a big impact in East Asia and Tibet. Many writers later wrote books to explain his work.
