The Mūlamadhyamakakārikā is a very famous book in Buddhist philosophy.

It is the main text for a group called the Madhyamaka school. This school is part of the Mahāyāna branch of Buddhism. The book is important because it helps people understand how things exist. Many thinkers have studied it for hundreds of years. It changed how people in Tibet and East Asia think about the world. It is a foundational work that shaped much of Buddhist history.

Nāgārjuna wrote this text using a special style of short verses. These verses are called karikas. They are very brief and sometimes hard to understand at first.

Because they are short, students could easily memorize them by heart. A teacher would then speak to explain the deeper meanings. This was a common way to teach in ancient times. The book is organized into 27 different chapters. It contains a total of 450 of these short verses.

Nāgārjuna was a Buddhist monk and philosopher from India.

He lived a long time ago, around the 2nd or 3rd century CE. We do not know exactly where he lived in India. We also do not know exactly how many books he wrote. Most of what we know about him comes from stories written much later. Scholars believe he was a Mahāyāna Buddhist. He lived during a time when these ideas were held by a small group of people.

His main idea was about something called emptiness. He used this to argue against the idea of svabhāva. Svabhāva means having a fixed or independent nature.

Nāgārjuna believed that all things are actually empty of this fixed nature. He said things exist because of "dependent origination." This means things happen because of other causes. He used logic to show that things are not self-caused. He also showed that things do not just appear without a cause.

This book connects to many other big ideas in history. It uses a "middle way" to explain the truth. This middle way stays between two extremes. One extreme is saying that everything exists forever. The other extreme is saying that nothing exists at all.

Nāgārjuna's work helps people find a balance between these two views. Many other authors later wrote commentaries to explain his difficult verses. These explanations helped spread his ideas across many different countries.
