He lived a long time ago, from 344 to 413 CE. He was born in a place called Kucha. His father was an Indian monk named Kumārāyana. His mother was a princess named Jīva. Because of his parents, he grew up with many different ideas. He studied many types of Buddhist teachings. He became very skilled at having debates with others. This helped him become a respected leader in his faith.

Kumārajīva's life was not always easy.

A general named Lü Guang once captured him. For many years, Kumārajīva was kept as a prisoner. During this time, he learned the Chinese language. He was even forced to marry and give up his monk vows. Later, a ruler named Yao Xing wanted to free him. Yao Xing sent armies to bring Kumārajīva to the city of Chang'an. In 401 CE, he finally arrived in the capital city.

Once in Chang'an, Kumārajīva led a large team of scholars. This team worked together to translate many Sanskrit texts. They did not work alone, but as a committee. Kumārajīva would read a text out loud. Then, he would explain the meaning in Chinese. His students and other monks would discuss the ideas. They would then write a new version in Chinese. Finally, Kumārajīva would check the work to make sure it was right. This was a big, public event for many people.

His team was very busy and productive. In about twelve years, they translated thirty-five sutras. Sutras are special holy books in Buddhism.

These translations included 294 scrolls of text. They also translated books about meditation and philosophy. Some of these famous books include the Diamond Sutra and the Lotus Sutra. He also helped translate the "Middle Treatise." His work helped bring new ideas to China. These ideas changed how people thought about the world.

Kumārajīva changed how people translated books. Before him, people used a system called geyi. This meant they matched Buddhist words with older Chinese words. Kumārajīva chose a different way. He wanted his translations to be smooth and easy to read. He cared more about the true meaning than being literal. This made his books very popular for a long time. He also created a way to write Sanskrit sounds using Chinese characters. This special way of writing helped shape the Chinese language. His work is still used by many people today.
