The Heart Sūtra is a very famous text in Mahāyāna Buddhism.

Its full name means "The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom." Many people call it the most used text in its tradition. It is studied and recited by many different groups. Some people even worship the figure in the text, Avalokiteśvara, as the "Ancient Buddha of the Southern Seas." This text is a central part of many Buddhist lives.

In the text, Avalokiteśvara speaks to a man named Śaripūtra. They talk about a big idea called emptiness, or śūnyatā.

The sūtra says that "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form." This means all things are connected and depend on each other. Avalokiteśvara explains this using five parts of human existence. These are form, feeling, volitions, perceptions, and mind. They are all considered empty in this way.

There are two main versions of this sūtra. The short version is the most popular one used today.

It was translated by a monk named Xuanzang. His version has 260 Chinese characters. The long version is different because it has more parts. It includes an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction uses the phrase "Thus have I heard." The end of the long version offers thanks to the Buddha.

Finding the exact history of the text is a hard job for scholars. Some think it began around 350 CE. Others believe it might be even older.

One of the oldest stone copies is from 661 CE. It was found at Yunju Temple near Beijing. There is also an old Sanskrit manuscript from a temple in Japan. It is made of palm leaves. This manuscript likely dates to the 7th or 8th century. Scholars still debate if it started in India or China.

Today, the Heart Sūtra links many different cultures together. It has been translated into English dozens of times. People also read it in Tibetan, Chinese, and Sanskrit.

Even though people have different ways of practicing, they often share this text. It helps them think about reality and wisdom. It remains a vital part of many spiritual journeys around the world.
