The name Guanyin is actually a short form of Guanshiyin. This name has a special meaning in Chinese. It means "the one who perceives the sounds of the world." This refers to the idea of listening to the cries of people. Many people believe Guanyin has miraculous powers to help those who pray.

This belief is found in important texts like the Lotus Sutra. Some followers believe Guanyin helps people after they depart from this world. They believe she places them in a lotus flower. Then, she sends them to a western pure land called Sukhāvatī.

Guanyin is known for being a symbol of great compassion.

Because of this, Guanyin can take many different forms. The Lotus Sutra says this figure can look like any type of being. This includes kings, children, or even different types of gods. Some people see Guanyin as a man, while others see a woman. Since about the 12th century, many people in East Asia have pictured Guanyin as female. Some thinkers even suggest the figure is genderless or androgynous. This is because of the idea that ultimate reality is empty of fixed forms.

History shows that the name has many roots.

The name Guanyin comes from the Sanskrit word Avalokitasvara. This original name also means a "sound perceiver." In the past, Guanyin was often shown as a male Bodhisattva. These early statues might even show a light moustache. Over time, the way people draw Guanyin has changed. In modern times, many see a beautiful woman in a white robe. She might hold a jar of pure water and a willow branch.

In India, the home of this figure was said to be Mount Potalaka. As the belief spread, different lands claimed their own version of this place. In China, Mount Putuo is the main site for pilgrims. In Korea, people visit Naksansa for their special journeys. Japan has its own sites, like the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. This is a journey through 33 different temples.
