Pure Land Buddhism is a major branch of Mahayana Buddhism.

It is a very popular tradition across East Asia. In China, some people call it the Lotus School. In Japan, it is often called the Nembutsu school. This tradition focuses on a very special goal. Many followers hope to be reborn in a Buddha's "pure land" after they die.

These lands are considered superior places to reach full Buddhahood. In a pure land, a person can meet a Buddha face to face. They can study without the many distractions or fears found in our world.

There are many different pure lands that people might seek.

The most popular one is Sukhavati, which means the "Land of Bliss." This is the pure land of the Buddha Amitābha. Some Buddhists also look toward the lands of Maitreya or Medicine Guru. To reach these places, people use different methods. A common way is the practice of mindfulness of the Buddha. In China, this is called niànfó, which means "Buddha recitation." In Japan, this practice is known as nembutsu.

People often do this by reciting the name of Amitābha.

Other practices can be used alongside reciting the Buddha's name.

Some followers might keep Buddhist precepts or recite sacred sutras. They might also use visualization or make special offerings. This tradition is unique because it offers hope to many people. It suggests that even ordinary or unlearned people can find a path. They can eventually reach Buddhahood regardless of their past karma. This makes the tradition very important in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. It is also a popular part of Tibetan Buddhism.

History shows that these ideas grew from very old roots.

These teachings first appeared in Indian Mahayana Buddhist sutras. They were once very popular in places like Kashmir and Central Asia. Some scholars believe that meditation traditions in Kashmir helped shape these ideas. The tradition relies on three main scriptures. These are the Sutra of Amitayus, the Contemplation Sutra, and the Amitabha Sutra. Some people also call the tradition "Amidism" when focusing on Amitābha. This focus helps connect followers to the living Buddhas of the universe.

Understanding these lands helps us see how Buddhists view the universe.

The universe is seen as having infinite Buddhas and Buddha-fields. Each Buddha has a field where they teach and guide others. These fields are purified by the great compassion of Buddhas and bodhisattvas. While some lands are impure, like our own world, pure lands are beautiful. They are often described as being covered in gold and beryl. This concept allows people to seek a better place for spiritual progress. It turns the difficult path of enlightenment into something reachable for everyone.
