The empire reached its highest point during his reign. He is remembered for his many military and spiritual achievements. Kanishka helped different cultures live together in his large territory. He was a descendant of Kujula Kadphises, the founder of the Kushan empire.

Kanishka managed his vast empire from two main capital cities. One capital was located at Puruṣapura, which is known today as Peshawar. His other major capital was at Mathura in India.

He also had a strong connection to the region of Kashmir. In Kashmir, a town called Kanishkapur was named after him. This town was located near the Baramulla Pass. Kanishka even built a massive monument there called a stupa.

History shows that Kanishka changed how his empire worked. Around 127 CE, he made a big change to his government. He stopped using the Greek language for official business. Instead, he chose Bactrian as the new official language.

The Rabatak inscription helps historians understand this important shift. This inscription records how he moved away from Greek traditions. This change helped the empire feel more connected to its own roots.

Kanishka is very famous for his support of Buddhism. Although he did not join the religion himself, he was a great patron. He provided money and support to help Buddhist ideas grow.

This support helped Buddhist teachings travel along the Silk Road. These ideas moved from Gandhara across mountains into China. He even helped lead the 4th Buddhist Council in Kashmir. He worked with scholars like Ashvaghosha to support these teachings.

We can learn about Kanishka through the gold coins he made. These coins show many different gods from various cultures. Some early coins used Greek names and images.
