He lived a long time ago, likely between 150 and 250 CE. He is famous for being a leader in the Mahāyāna movement of Buddhism. In fact, many people in Tibetan Buddhism respect him so much they call him the "second Buddha."

He helped start a special way of thinking called Madhyamaka. This name means the "Middle Way." His ideas were so strong that they influenced Indian philosophy for a thousand years. He remains a key figure for many Buddhists living today.

Nāgārjuna’s main work was teaching a big idea called "emptiness."

He explained this idea in his most famous book, the *Mūlamadhyamakakārikā*. This book is made of short verses that use logic to explain deep thoughts. He used these verses to look closely at how things exist. His writings helped shape many different traditions in East Asia and Tibet. Even today, students and teachers study his books to understand the world. His work is considered a foundation for much of Mahāyāna Buddhist thought.

Not much is known for sure about his actual life. Most of what we know comes from stories written hundreds of years after he died. These stories are often called hagiographies, which are accounts that show a person as a holy figure.

Some scholars think he might have been an advisor to a king. This king may have ruled the Sātavāhana dynasty on the Deccan Plateau. Some researchers believe he lived in a monastery in the Andhra region. These details help us piece together a picture of his time in India.

Many wonderful legends surround his name.

Some stories say he was a master of magic and alchemy. People claimed he could turn rocks into gold or make an elixir for long life. Other tales say he traveled to the palace of the nāgas. Nāgas are magical, snake-like beings found in many Indian stories. Some legends say he found hidden holy books in the ocean or the Himalayas. These stories show how much people admire his wisdom and power.

Because he was so important, many different books are named after him.

This can sometimes make it hard for historians to know which books he actually wrote. There are even other people in history with the same name. Some might have been writers of medicine or different religious leaders. Despite this confusion, the original teachings of Nāgārjuna continue to guide people. His life and ideas connect the ancient past to the way people think today.
