He is also a part of the Golden Garland. This means he holds a special place in the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Naropa's path to wisdom involved many steps. He first became a very smart scholar at a university. Later, he left his comfortable life to find a true master. He went on a long search for a teacher named Tilopa. During this search, he faced twelve minor hardships. These were difficult trials that actually taught him hidden lessons.

After finding Tilopa, he spent twelve years studying with him. He then faced twelve major hardships to finish his training. These steps helped him reach a state called mahamudra.

Historians have different ideas about when Naropa lived. Some scholars say he lived from 1016 to 1100 CE. However, other experts believe those dates might be wrong. One researcher named Turrell V. Wylie suggested he lived from 956 to 1040 CE. Another scholar named John Newman also supported these later dates. It is hard to be certain about the exact years. This is because many old stories use different ways to count time.

As a young man, Naropa worked by selling wood. He eventually studied at the famous Nalanda university. He was such a good debater that he became an abbot there. He even held the title of Guardian of the Northern Gate.

Naropa's work still connects to the world today. He is famous for the Six Dharmas. These are six special practices that help people reach Buddhahood quickly. These teachings were passed down from Tilopa to Naropa, and then to Marpa. They continue through a long line of teachers to this day.
