Buddhist councils are special meetings held by monastic communities. These groups are known as the sangha. The meetings happen to talk about important ideas and rules. They also help to check and fix the teachings. These gatherings are often called saṅgīti. This word means "reciting together" or "joint rehearsal."

These councils work by having people recite teachings out loud. This helps everyone remember the same information. At the first council, Ananda recited the spoken sutras. These are the Buddha's sayings. Another monk named Upali recited the Vinaya. The Vinaya contains the rules for how monks should live.

The first big council happened one year after the Buddha died. It was held in a cave near Rajagriha. A senior disciple named Mahākāśyapa led the meeting. King Ajatashatru helped support this event. Some stories say 499 top monks attended. Ananda trained himself until the morning of the council. Once he reached a new stage of enlightenment, he joined the group.

Later councils also took place in history. The second council happened more than 100 years after the Buddha passed. It was held in Valukarama in Vaiśālī. King Kalashoka helped lead this meeting. Some monks there were following different rules. They were accepting money from regular people. This caused a big disagreement among the monks.

These events show how different groups formed. The disagreement at the second council led to a split. One group was called the Mahāsāṃghikas. They had about ten thousand monks. They held their own meeting to discuss their ideas. Today, many scholars study these old stories. They look at different texts to see what really happened.
