After the Buddha died, his followers held meetings. These meetings are called councils. They were used to check the rules. They also helped to fix the teachings.

The first council happened one year after the Buddha passed. It took place in a cave near Rajagriha. A leader named Mahakasyapa ran the meeting. He had help from King Ajatashatru. Ananda recited the spoken teachings. Upali recited the rules for the monks. Some monks argued about the rules. They wondered if some minor rules should go. But the group chose to keep all rules.

More than 100 years later, a second council was held. It took place in a place called Vaishali. King Kalashoka helped with this meeting. Some monks there were not following the rules. They were accepting money from people. This caused a big disagreement. This split led to two different groups. One group was called the Mahasamghikas. They had ten thousand monks. They held their own meeting too. Scholars still study these old stories today.
