The Sutta Pitaka is a large collection of teachings. It is part of the Pali Tripitaka. This is a set of three holy books.

The Sutta Pitaka is the second part of that set. The other parts are the Vinaya Pitaka and the Abhidhamma Pitaka. This collection has more than 10,000 suttas. Suttas are teachings from the Buddha or his close friends.

Tradition says these words were first spoken out loud. A man named Ananda helped share them. He did this at a meeting called the First Buddhist Council. This happened shortly after the Buddha died.

There are five groups of suttas in this collection. The first is the Digha Nikaya. These are long talks. The second is the Majjhima Nikaya. These are middle-length talks. The third is the Samyutta Nikaya. These are connected talks. The fourth is the Anguttara Nikaya. These talks are put in order by number.

The last group is the Khuddaka Nikaya. This group is a mix of many things. It has sermons, ideas, and even poems. People still study these words to learn today.
