The Sutta Pitaka is a very important collection of teachings. It is the second part of the Pali Tripitaka. The Tripitaka is a set of three sacred collections. The first part is called the Vinaya Pitaka. The third part is known as the Abhidhamma Pitaka.

Many people follow Theravada Buddhism. For them, this collection is a main source of truth. It contains more than 10,000 suttas. These suttas are teachings from the Buddha or his close friends.

This collection works by grouping teachings into five sets. These sets are called nikayas. The first set is the Digha Nikaya. It contains 34 long talks. The second set is the Majjhima Nikaya. This set has 152 medium-length talks.

The third set is the Samyutta Nikaya. Some say it has 2,889 suttas. Other sources say it has 7,762 suttas. The fourth set is the Anguttara Nikaya. These teachings are organized by number from one to eleven.

History tells us how these words were shared. Tradition says the Buddha's cousin, Ananda, first spoke them aloud. He did this at the First Buddhist Council. This meeting happened shortly after the Buddha died. The council also set rules for monks and nuns.

Some scholars have different ideas about this history. Richard Gombrich thinks the first four nikayas come from the Buddha. Professor Hirakawa Akira has a different view. He thinks short passages were expanded into long suttas over a century.

The fifth set is called the Khuddaka Nikaya. This is a diverse mix of many different things. It includes sermons, doctrines, and even beautiful poetry. The contents can change depending on the edition used. For example, the Thai edition has 15 parts. The Sinhalese edition has 17 parts. The Burmese edition includes 18 parts.

This group includes famous works like the Dhammapada.

Today, many people study these ancient words. Many of the first four nikayas are translated into English. The Pali Text Society has translated much of them. You can also find translations by Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu. These are available through a Creative Commons license.

Learning these suttas helps people understand Buddhist ideas. It connects modern readers to very old ways of thinking. The teachings remain a huge part of religious life.
