These guidelines help the community, known as the Sangha, live together in harmony. The word Vinaya comes from a Sanskrit verb. It can mean to guide, to train, or even to teach. Many people translate it simply as "discipline." It is one of the main parts of the Buddhist teachings. Together with other texts, it helps guide how people act and live.

These rules work in several different ways to help the community. One main part is called the Prātimokṣa. This is a list of rules that monks and nuns recite together. They do this during the new moon and the full moon. The rules are listed from most serious to less serious. Some rules are very strict and can lead to being removed from the group. Other parts of the Vinaya explain these rules using stories. These stories show why a rule was created in the first place.

According to tradition, the Vinaya began during the life of the Buddha. In the very early years, the followers lived in harmony without any rules. This was because the first disciples were very wise. However, the community grew larger over thirteen years. New situations arose that needed guidance for the monks and nuns. After the Buddha died, a person named Upāli recited the rules at a big meeting. This meeting was called the First Buddhist council. This helped keep the teachings organized for everyone.

There are many different versions of the Vinaya used today. Three main traditions are still used by many groups. The Theravada tradition is found in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. The Mulasarvastivada tradition is used in Tibetan Buddhism. The Dharmaguptaka tradition is used in East Asian Buddhism. Other older schools like the Sarvāstivāda also have manuscripts. Many of these texts were translated into Chinese long ago. Some of these important writings date back to the 5th century.

Learning the Vinaya is about more than just following laws. It is a way for people to train their minds. By following ethical rules, they build a strong foundation. This foundation helps them focus during meditation. It also helps them gain wisdom. The rules cover many parts of daily life. They include how to get medical supplies or robes. They even explain how to hold special ceremonies for new members.
