A bhikkhunī is a fully ordained Buddhist nun. These women follow a special set of rules called the Vinaya. These rules guide how they live and act every day. The number of rules can change depending on the school of Buddhism. For example, the Theravada school uses 311 rules. The Dharmaguptaka school uses 348 rules. The Mulasarvastivada school uses 364 rules.

Many people believe that women are just as capable of reaching enlightenment as men. The Buddhist Canon says that women can reach all four stages of enlightenment. This includes reaching nirvana, which is a state of peace. In the Mahayana tradition, some texts say that 6,000 nuns received predictions of becoming a Buddha. Some famous women in history became bhikkhunīs. These included Queen Khema and the Buddha's former wife, Yasodharā.

The tradition of nuns began a long time ago. The Buddha created the order of bhikkhunīs at the request of his aunt, Mahapajapati Gotami. She became the very first ordained nun. Some stories say the Buddha was hesitant at first. He may have worried that having nuns would make the community weaker. There are also rules called the Eight Garudhammas that make nuns subordinate to monks. Some scholars believe these rules were added much later by other people.

Becoming a bhikkhunī is a long process that happens in steps. First, a person becomes a layperson and takes refuge vows. Then, they might take novice vows to become a getsulma. In some traditions, they spend two years as a probationary nun. This step ensures they are ready for the next part. Finally, they undergo two higher ordinations to become fully ordained.

In some parts of the world, the tradition of nuns had to start over. This happened in places where the lineage had died out. For example, in 2022, a major event happened in Bhutan. On June 23, 2022, 144 nuns were fully ordained there. Most of these women were Bhutanese. This was a very important moment in their modern history.
