Its name means "Basket of Discipline." It is the first of three parts in the Pali Tripitaka. This set is the main scripture for Theravada Buddhism. The other two parts are the Sutta Piṭaka and the Abhidhamma Piṭaka. This book focuses on rules for monks and nuns. These people belong to a group called the Sangha. The rules help them live in a certain way.

This book works by giving rules and explaining them. One part is called the Suttavibhaṅga. It contains the Pāṭimokkha and a commentary. The Mahāvibhaṅga section gives rules for monks. The Bhikkhunīvibhaṅga section gives rules for nuns. There is also a section called the Khandhaka. It has 22 chapters on many topics. Finally, the Parivāra section analyzes the rules. It looks at them from different points of view.

Tradition says these texts started a long time ago. They were compiled at the First Council. This happened shortly after the Buddha died. A man named Upāli recited the Vinaya Piṭaka. Most scholars think these texts are quite old. They believe they date from before the different schools separated. Most versions of the text are very similar to each other.

There are many specific rules in these texts. The Pali version of the Pāṭimokkha has 227 rules for bhikkhus. These are the monks. It also has 311 rules for bhikkhunis. These are the nuns. The sections called Vibhaṅga give detailed explanations. They also include origin stories for each rule. The Khandhaka section also uses origin stories. These stories explain how the rules began.

In the early years, the Sangha had no vinaya. The Buddha's first followers lived in harmony. They did not need rules because they were highly realized. As the group grew, new situations happened. The Buddha and the community felt some things were not right. The first rule was about sexual intercourse. This rule started after a monk's family asked him to help them. The Buddha called his teaching the "Dhamma-Vinaya." This means he valued both philosophy and virtue.
