Its name means "Basket of Discipline." It is the first part of a set called the Pali Tripitaka. This set is used in Theravada Buddhism.

The book holds rules for monks and nuns. These people belong to a group called the Sangha. In the beginning, there were no rules. The Buddha's first followers lived in harmony. But as the group grew, new rules became necessary. One of the first rules was about sexual intercourse. The book tells a story about why this rule was made. It tells of a monk and his former wife.

There are many parts to this book. One part lists 227 rules for monks. Another part lists 311 rules for nuns. Some sections explain these rules with stories. These stories show how each rule started. Other parts of the book analyze the rules in different ways. Many scholars believe these texts are very old. They were recited by a man named Upāli. The Buddha called his teaching the "Dhamma-Vinaya." This means he valued both ideas and good behavior.
