Many Buddhist groups use special collections of writings. These are called canons. One famous name for these books is the Tipitaka. This word means "three baskets."

Not all groups use only three parts. Some ancient schools had four or five parts. Some even had extra collections for magic spells.

Different traditions keep their own versions. The Pali Canon is used in Southeast Asia. The Chinese Canon is used in East Asia. There is also a Tibetan Canon. Some people use a twelvefold system to group teachings. These include stories of past lives and predictions. Many of these old texts were shared by word of mouth first. Later, they were finally written down. Studying these books helps us learn about history.
