It is very important to the Theravada Buddhist tradition. These books are written in the Pali language. The collection is also called the Tipitaka. This word means "three baskets."

The three baskets are the Vinaya Pitaka, the Sutta Pitaka, and the Abhidhamma Pitaka.

The Vinaya Pitaka holds rules for monks. The Sutta Pitaka holds talks and poems from the Buddha. The Abhidhamma Pitaka holds deep ideas about the mind.

Long ago, people did not write these words down. Instead, they used their memory. Monks would say the teachings out loud to keep them safe. This was an oral tradition. Later, the words were written on palm leaves. This happened in Sri Lanka a long time ago. Some people believe these teachings came from the Buddha himself. Other thinkers say his followers helped shape the ideas. Today, many people still memorize these texts. Some even recite them as a way to meditate.
