The term Hīnayāna is an old name in Buddhism. It means "small vehicle" or "lesser vehicle."

A vehicle is a way of life. It is a path that leads to enlightenment. This is a state of being awake and peaceful.

Some people use this name for early Buddhist schools. These schools follow paths like the "Listeners Vehicle." They also follow the "Solitary-Realizers Vehicle." These paths focus on the person seeking peace.

Other Buddhists follow the Mahāyāna. This means "great vehicle." They want to help all living things. They do not just seek peace for themselves.

Many people think the name Hīnayāna is not kind. It can sound like it means something is bad or low. Because of this, many scholars use a new name. They call these early groups the Nikāya.

In the past, different groups lived in the same places. Some monks lived side by side in one monastery. They had different ideas, but they shared the same space. It is a way to see how many different ways people find peace.
