The term Hīnayāna is an old name used in Buddhism. It literally means "small vehicle" or "lesser vehicle."

In this context, a vehicle is a way of life. It is a path that leads to enlightenment. Enlightenment is a state of being awake and peaceful. Many people use this term to talk about early Buddhist schools. These schools often follow specific paths to reach peace. One path is called the Śrāvakayāna, or "Listeners Vehicle." Another path is the Pratyekabuddhayāna, which means "Solitary-Realizers Vehicle." These paths focus on the individual person seeking to end suffering.

There is a big difference between these paths and the Mahāyāna. The Mahāyāna is known as the "great vehicle."

While the Hīnayāna paths focus on the self, the Mahāyāna focuses on others. Mahāyāna Buddhists want to help all living beings find enlightenment. They do not just seek peace for themselves. Some thinkers see the Hīnayāna as a first or preliminary step. It is seen as an individual way to travel toward the goal. The Mahāyāna is viewed as a larger way to help everyone at once. This distinction helps explain how different groups approach their faith.

History shows that these groups did not always live apart.

In ancient India, monks from different schools often lived in the same monasteries. They lived side by side even if they had different ideas. A monk named Yijing visited India in the 7th century. He saw that there were many different subdivisions of schools. He noted that it was not always easy to group them. Some schools had many different traditions within them. He even saw that some monks studied both types of teachings. This shows that the two ways could exist together peacefully.

Words can sometimes carry heavy meanings in different languages.

In Sanskrit, the word hīna can mean "little" or "deficient." Some dictionaries say it can even mean "despicable." Because of this, many modern scholars find the term offensive. They feel it sounds like a criticism of others. Instead of using Hīnayāna, many scholars now use the word Nikāya. This refers to the early Buddhist schools without using a negative label. Using different names helps people talk about history with more respect. It avoids using words that might hurt someone's feelings.

Today, we can see how these ideas connect to the world.

Many people in places like Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia follow the Theravāda tradition. Some scholars used to call this tradition Hīnayāna, but that is not always accurate. Different groups in China, Japan, and Vietnam identify as Mahāyāna. Even in Tibet, people practice many different traditions together. A teacher named Thrangu Rinpoche said no path is truly inferior. He believed that all these traditions are important ways to find peace. Learning about these names helps us understand how people think about the world.
