The word comes from Sanskrit. It can mean a mentor, an expert, or a master. A guru is much more than just a teacher of facts. They act as a counselor to help shape a student's values. They also share life experiences and act as an inspiration. This relationship is between a guru and a student called a shisya. A shisya is someone who seeks knowledge or truth.

A guru helps a student find their own inner potential.

There are different ways to think about the word guru. One popular idea is that the word comes from two parts. The part "gu" means darkness, and "ru" means light. This suggests a guru is someone who pushes away the darkness of ignorance. Another way to look at the word is through its weight. In Sanskrit, the word can mean being heavy with knowledge. It can also mean being heavy with spiritual wisdom. This is similar to words in Latin and Greek that mean weighty or serious.

This tradition has a very long history in India. The oldest mentions of gurus are in the early Vedic texts of Hinduism. By the first millennium BCE, a system called gurukula was well established. A gurukula was a school run by a guru. In these schools, students lived with their teacher. They would help the guru with work to show they wanted to learn. Students studied many things like grammar, music, and even martial arts. This helped keep important knowledge alive for many years.

Many different religions use the idea of a guru. In Hinduism, a guru helps a person reach spiritual perfection. In Jainism, a guru is a spiritual leader, often an ascetic. Sikhism has also used this tradition since it began in the 15th century. The founder of Sikhism was named Guru Nanak. His scripture is called the Guru Granth Sahib. In Vajrayāna Buddhism, the guru is a figure people worship.

These different paths all show how important a guide can be.

Great thinkers have written about how a guru works. An 8th-century philosopher named Adi Shankara wrote about this. He said a teacher is like a pilot for a student on a journey. He also said a teacher is like a raft for a student rowing. He believed the best teachers ask questions to help students find answers. This is different from just giving the answer right away. The Bhagavad Gita is another famous text that shows this. It tells the story of Arjuna seeking guidance from Krishna.
