Theravada is the oldest existing school of Buddhism.

Its name means "Doctrine of the Elders." This name honors the senior monks from the early community. Followers of this tradition are called Theravadins. They work to keep the Buddha's teachings exactly as they were. They use a sacred language called Pali for this work. This language helps them communicate across different lands. Today, it is the second largest branch of Buddhism. About 36% of all Buddhists belong to this school.

They focus on studying the original doctrine and monastic rules. This way of life is called pariyatti. They also follow strict rules for monks, known as Vinaya. Because they stick so closely to old texts, they reject other newer scriptures. For example, they do not recognize some Buddhas found in Mahayana Buddhism. They do not include figures like Amitabha or Vairocana in their teachings. This keeps their focus on the original Pali Canon.

It grew from an early group called the Sthavira nikaya. By the 3rd century BCE, it was developing in India. The teachings were eventually written down in the Pali Canon. Missionary monks like Mahinda helped spread the faith to Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, the tradition became very strong in places like Anuradhapura. Kings there acted as protectors of the religion.

It is the official religion in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Cambodia. It is also the main form of Buddhism in Laos and Thailand. In the 11th century, monks helped convert much of mainland Southeast Asia. Kings like Anawrahta in Burma and Ram Khamhaeng in Thailand helped it grow. They built many new temples and supported scholars. In Cambodia, even old sites like Angkor Wat became Buddhist monasteries.
