Sinhala is a major language spoken on the island of Sri Lanka.

It is the primary language for about 16 million Sinhalese people. This group is the largest ethnic group on the island. About 2 million other Sri Lankans also use it as their first language. The name of the language comes from a Sanskrit word for lion. Some people believe the name means the "abode of lions." This might be because lions used to live on the island in large numbers.

One very interesting thing about Sinhala is how it is used. It has two main styles called written and spoken.

This difference is known as diglossia. The written style is used for books, poetry, and official papers. It is also used for news on the radio or TV. The spoken style is what people use in their everyday lives. This includes talking to friends or giving a speech at a university.

The history of the language goes back a very long time.

Early forms of the language can be found from the 3rd century BCE. Historians divide its growth into four main stages or epochs. These are Elu Prakrit, Proto-Sinhala, Medieval Sinhala, and Modern Sinhala. Long ago, pilgrims visited a Buddhist monastery at Sigiriya. They left behind 1,500 poems written on the Sigiriya Mirror Wall. These poems were written between the 6th and 10th centuries.

Many different groups have helped shape the language over the years.

In the past, people moved to Sri Lanka from places like Eastern India. This brought new features to the language. Later, about 300 years of colonial rule added words from Portuguese, Dutch, and English. Sinhala also has a close link to the Vedda language. The Vedda language is an endangered indigenous creole. Some words for things like leaves or pigs come from this source.

Even though people speak the same language, they have different accents.

Different provinces like Uva, Kandy, or Galle have their own ways of speaking. In the southern part of the island, people use a special word to show respect. They often add the word "boya" to the end of names for tools or crops. This shows they value the things they are talking about. Even with these different regional sounds, most Sinhalese people can still understand each other easily.
