It is also spoken on Minicoy Island in India. People call the language "Divehi" to mean the language of the islanders. This name comes from the old words "divu" and "vesi." The word "divu" means island. It is still part of many island names today. For example, you might see names like Hanimādū or Mīdū.

This language is very important to the people who live there. They even have a special holiday called Dhivehi Language Day. They celebrate it on April 14 to honor a writer named Husain Salahuddin.

Writing Dhivehi is a very special process. People use a unique script called Thaana. This script is written from right to left. It looks similar to Arabic writing in some ways. Long ago, people did not have paper like we do now. They carved their words into coral stone. They also used copper plates for official orders and grants.

These copper plates are called "lōmāfānu." These old writings show us how the language has changed over many centuries.

Learning about the history of Dhivehi is like solving a puzzle. It is a relative of the Sinhala language from Sri Lanka. Both languages come from an ancient group called Elu Prakrit. A researcher named Wilhelm Geiger studied these languages in the early 1900s. He once thought Dhivehi was a daughter of Sinhala. Later, a scholar named M. W. S. de Silva suggested they shared a common mother language. This means they are like cousins rather than a parent and child. They are related, but people cannot easily understand one by just hearing the other.

Many different cultures have helped shape the words we hear today. Over time, Dhivehi has borrowed words from Arabic and Persian. It has also taken words from Tamil, Malayalam, and French. Even English and Portuguese have left their mark on the language. You can see this in words like "atoll" and "dhoni." An "atoll" is a ring of coral islands. A "dhoni" is a boat used to travel between islands.

These words show how the islands and the sea are part of the language.

Because the Maldives is made of many islands, people speak in different ways. These different ways are called dialects. The standard dialect comes from the capital city, Malé. However, the southern islands have very different dialects. The Huvadhu, Addu, and Fuvahmulah dialects are quite unique. In fact, people from the north might not understand the southern speakers. The Huvadhu dialect is special because it keeps many very old words. The Addu dialect was once a center for learning and education.
