People also speak it on Minicoy Island. The name comes from an old phrase. It means "islanders' language."

People write Dhivehi using the Thaana script. This writing goes from right to left. Long ago, people wrote on coral stone. They also used copper plates for official notes.

Dhivehi is a relative of the Sinhala language. However, the two languages are not the same. They cannot be easily understood by each other. Many different languages have helped shape Dhivehi over time. These include Arabic, English, and Persian.

Because the Maldives has many islands, people speak in different ways. These ways are called dialects. The standard way comes from the capital city, Malé. In the southern atolls, the speech is very different. People in the north may not understand them. The Huvadhu dialect uses many old words. The Addu dialect was once used for school and learning. People in the Maldives celebrate Dhivehi Language Day on April 14. This is the birthday of a writer named Husain Salahuddin.
