More than 2.6 million people speak it. They live in Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.

Afar is a very important language. In Djibouti, it is a national language. You can hear it on the radio. In Eritrea, it is one of nine national languages. People hear it on the radio there, too. In Ethiopia, it is an official working language.

People use different ways to write Afar. Some use the Latin script. This is the set of letters we use in English. Others use the Arabic script. In Ethiopia, people used to use the Ge'ez script.

Two smart people named Dimis and Redo helped a lot. In the 1970s, they made a formal alphabet. They called it Qafar Feera. It uses the Latin script. Many groups now work together to pick the best way to write it. This helps people read and write Afar well. The language belongs to a large group called Afroasiatic. Its closest relative is the Saho language.
