Amharic has a special way of writing. It uses a script called Geʽez. The letters go from left to right. This system is called an abugida. In an abugida, each character shows a consonant and a vowel together. There are about 280 letters in the whole alphabet.

The language has many sounds. Some sounds are made by popping air out of the throat. This is called an ejective sound. Amharic is also used by the Rastafari religion. Some Jewish groups also speak a version called Jewish Amharic. This version uses Jewish words instead of Christian ones. For example, they might call a grasshopper "Moses's horses."
