In the early years, there were no rules. The Buddha's followers lived in harmony. But the group grew very large over time. New situations arose that needed guidance. So, the Buddha and the community made rules.

One main part is called the Prātimokṣa. These are the rules for monks and nuns. The group says these rules out loud during full moons. Other parts of the Vinaya explain the rules. They tell stories about why a rule was made. They also show how to use the rules.

Different groups use different Vinaya traditions today. One is the Theravada tradition. Another is the Mulasarvastivada tradition. A third is the Dharmaguptaka tradition. Each group has its own way of following these old teachings.
