The Yulanpen Sutra is a special book for Buddhists. It is part of the Mahayana tradition. This book tells a story about a man named Maudgalyayana. He was a student of the Buddha. One day, Maudgalyayana gained new powers. He used these powers to look for his parents.

He found his mother in the preta world. Some people call these hungry ghosts. His mother was in a very bad state. Maudgalyayana tried to give her a bowl of rice. But the rice turned into hot coal. She could not eat it.

Maudgalyayana asked the Buddha for help. The Buddha gave him a way to help. He said to give food to the sangha. The sangha is a group of monks. This should happen at the end of the monsoon season. This act creates merit. Merit is a kind of good power. This power can help the mother. It can help parents from many past lives too.

This story is very important. It helped start the Ghost Festival in China. This festival also influenced the Bon Festival in Japan. Many people use these stories to show love to their parents.
