It honors the spirits of ancestors. This custom has been around for over 500 years. Many people see it as a family reunion. People return to their family homes during this time. They visit and clean the graves of their ancestors.

Families also place offerings on home altars. They might use flowers or food. Some people make animals from vegetables. They use a cucumber to make a horse. They use an eggplant to make a cow. These help the spirits travel home and back.

People also perform a dance called Bon Odori. This dance can be very different in each region. Some dances use fans or small towels. Some people dance in a circle around a wooden scaffold. The dance can even show local work. For example, one dance mimics the work of fishermen.
