People visit public shrines called jinja to honor them. Priests work at these shrines. They offer food and drink to the kami. This helps people live in peace with nature. People also value being clean. They use ritual washing before they worship.

Shinto has no single founder. It also has no single holy book. There is no central group in charge. This means beliefs can vary from place to place. Some people worship kami in their own homes. Many people in Japan follow both Shinto and Buddhism. They often take part in festivals for both. Shinto is the largest religion in Japan. There are about 100,000 public shrines in the country. The name Shinto means "the way of the gods."
