The Fujiwara were a very powerful family in Japan. They ruled for a long time. They started in the 7th century. A man named Nakatomi no Kamatari was the founder. He helped make new laws for the land. An emperor gave him the name Fujiwara. This name came from a field of wisteria flowers.

The family stayed strong by marrying their daughters to emperors. This was a smart plan. The Fujiwara men became the grandfathers or fathers-in-law to the leaders. This gave them great control. They held special titles like regent. A regent is someone who rules for a young leader.

At their peak, the family was very rich. Fujiwara no Michinaga was a great leader. He had many family ties to the emperors. Under the Fujiwara, art and writing grew. Women wrote famous books like "The Tale of Genji." They also used a new way of writing called hiragana. Later, the family lost power to warrior groups. They remained close advisors to the emperors for many years.
