These nesting dolls are a famous symbol of Russian culture. Many people call them Russian stacking dolls or nesting dolls. They often represent family, fertility, and the idea of a mother carrying a child. Some people even use them to show the unity of the soul, mind, and heart. In Russia, they can represent the idea of "Mother Russia." Even today, you can find a matryoshka doll in your phone's emoji list.

Making these dolls is a careful and skillful process. Most artists use linden wood to craft the pieces. They do not carve them from one single block of wood. Instead, they use a machine called a lathe to shape the pieces.

A wood carver uses special handmade wooden calipers to get the right size. They also use different types of metal chisels to shape the wood. Once the pieces are ready, artists paint them with very detailed designs. The dolls can look like people, animals, or even flowers.

The history of these dolls began in the late 1800s. In 1890, a carver named Vasily Zvyozdochkin made the first set. He worked from a design by a painter named Sergey Malyutin.

This first set had eight dolls in total. The largest doll was a mother wearing a traditional dress. She was holding a red-combed rooster in her hands. Inside her were her children, including girls and a boy. The very last doll was a tiny baby.

Matryoshka dolls have traveled all over the world. In 1900, a set was shown at a big fair in Paris. That set even won a bronze medal! Later, in 1906, another set won a gold medal in Milan.

Today, many different cities in Russia make them. The city of Sergiev Posad is a very famous center for making toys. In the United States, the Museum of Russian Art in Minnesota holds about 3,500 dolls. One person even made a massive set with 51 different dolls in 2003.

You can see how these dolls relate to many other things. Sometimes people use the term "Russian Doll" to describe things that are layered. This is like an onion, where you peel off one layer to find another.

Scientists even use the name to describe tiny structures like carbon nanotubes. Designers also use this idea for nesting tables that fit inside each other. Whether they are toys or metaphors, the idea of things hiding inside things is very special.
